A Milestone Moment!
Starting at an early year’s childcare setting is a big milestone—for both parents and children. It is often an emotional transition filled with excitement, nervousness, and questions. Whether your child is a baby, toddler, or preschooler, their first day in an unfamiliar environment can feel like a big leap. The good news? With preparation, empathy, and helpful tips, parents can ease the transition and help set their child up for a great start.
What to Expect on the First Day
1. A Range of Emotions (For Everyone!)
It is completely normal for both children and parents/carers to feel a mix of anxiety, excitement, sadness, and relief. Your child might cry at drop-off, or they might walk in without a second glance. You might feel proud and tearful all at once. Expect these emotions, acknowledge them, and know they are part of the process.
2. Separation Anxiety
Children can experience separation anxiety to a certain degree when starting childcare. This can show up as crying, clinginess, or resistance at drop-off. The good news is that most children adapt within a short few days or weeks once they become familiar with their caregivers and routines.
At Huggie Bears Family Childcare we have considerable experience with helping children to have a positive experience and to settle in well to the daily routine.
3. Adjustment Period
Do not expect a perfect first day—and that is fine. It can take time for children to settle into an unfamiliar environment. They might be tired or grouchy after their first few days. New experiences are exciting but also exhausting.
4. Communication
At Huggie Bears Family Childcare we understand this transition is significant and will keep you informed. Expect updates, photos, or messages to reassure you via our communication app – see our Curriculum page for more information. Do hesitate to ask how your child did and what you can do to support them at home.
5. Calm Drop Off – Keeping Goodbyes Short and Positive
The first goodbye can be difficult. Children often notice our emotions, so staying calm and confident helps them feel secure, which is important. Keep your goodbye short, sweet, and positive. It can be tempting to linger when saying goodbye, especially if your child is upset. However, a quick, confident goodbye (“I love you and I’ll see you after nap time!”) sends a clear message that you trust they will be well cared for. Avoid not saying goodbye —it can increase anxiety and break trust.
6. Expect a Range of Emotions – Confirm Feelings Without Dwelling
Your child might cry, cling, or seem perfectly fine—every child reacts differently. It is also normal for emotions to change over time, even weeks into the routine. Consistency, patience, and reassurance are key.
If your child is upset, acknowledge their feelings (“I know it’s hard to say goodbye, and I’ll miss you too”) but stay calm and positive. Children take cues from your tone and energy.
And remember it is okay if you get emotional, too. This is a big step for both of you.
7. Be Consistent
Try to keep drop-off and pick-up times consistent, especially during the first few weeks. Routine builds security, and being there when you say you will reinforce trust. Young children may not be able to tell the time just yet, but their body clock will alert them as to when to expect you.
8. Debrief Gently at the End of the Day
Ask simple, open-ended questions at collection time like, “What did you play with today?” or “What did you eat for lunch?” Do not worry if your child does not say much at first—over time, they will begin to share more, especially as they develop and get older. Babies and young toddlers like cuddles and smiles and will take pleasure in your company.
9. Build a Relationship with your child’s Key Person
A strong parent-caregiver relationship makes a significant difference. Keep open lines of communication, ask questions, and share important updates about your child. Feeling connected to the people caring for your child can give you greater peace of mind. We use a Daily Diary for each child to enhance communication between home and Huggie Bears Family Childcare.
Final Thoughts
The first day at Huggie Bears Family Childcare marks the beginning of a new chapter—one filled with learning, growth, and new experiences. With preparation, patience, and a positive outlook, you can help your child step into this new world with confidence. Just remember that starting childcare is a transition, not just an event. Focus on being positive, trust in your childcare provider, and remind yourself that this step—while sometimes tough—is a big part of your child’s growing independence.
