Early Years Foundation Stage

Huggie Bears Family Childcare follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), England’s national early education and childcare framework, as set out by the Department for Education. The EYFS curriculum is play-based, meaning children learn through active exploration and discovery. Our curriculum is also child-centred, which means that it is personalised to each child’s individual needs and interests in the seven areas of learning and development, see below:

The EYFS sets out seven areas of learning and development that all children should experience. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected.

Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

The three prime areas are:

  • Communication and Language: Supporting children to develop their listening, speaking, and understanding skills.
  • Physical Development: Encouraging physical activity, movement, and coordination.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Helping children build relationships, self-confidence, and self-awareness.

Huggie Bears Family Childcare also supports children in the four Specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:

  • Literacy: Introducing children to reading and writing through engaging activities.
  • Mathematics: Developing early numeracy skills through play and exploration.
  • Understanding the World: Encouraging curiosity and understanding about the world around them.
  • Expressive Arts and Design: Providing opportunities for children to explore their creativity through art, music, and design.

Huggie Bears Family Childcare is strongly committed to providing a safe, caring, and stimulating environment where children can learn and grow. The standards made statutory by the EYFS will reassure parents that their children will be safe and well looked after. It also emphasises the importance of working closely with parents.

Outdoor Play

We have a wonderful garden that extends from the nursery room. There is a wide variety of equipment to physically challenge the children. In addition, there are opportunities to mark make, be creative for example, use of sand and water play, as well as painting.

The aim of Huggie Bears Family Childcare to be outdoors as far as possible as children’s learning is often best reciprocated outdoors as it is a natural environment for children to observe and learn from. At Huggie Bears Family Childcare we also enjoy walks and outdoor play in local parks and amenities.

We will always endeavour to move our activities outside when the weather is good and children will have access directly into our garden where they will be able to play, explore and enjoy our large range of garden amenities.

Stay connected with Tapestry

We use Tapestry – an amazing easy-to-use secure online learning journal which supports Huggie Bears Family Childcare to share children’s learning and development and celebrate children’s achievement with parents and carers.

Huggie Bears Family Childcare uses Tapestry to create a record of a child’s experiences, learning and development through their early years. We can capture photographs, videos and observational records together with the child’s parents and carers to collate a record of each child’s learning and development. Enabling Huggie Bears Family Childcare to create a record of each child’s unique development whilst valuing parents input and creating strong relationships with families.

Parents and carers will be provided with a secure log in enabling them to view their child’s progress and become involved in sharing their child’s learning and development at home too.

Tapestry has additional features such as supporting families with playful learning at home, together with quick and simple communication tools, information and advice and reporting.

Birth to Five Matters

The “Birth to Five Matters” document demonstrates how the four themes (A Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments and Learning & Development) and the principles that inform them work together for children in the EYFS.

We use “Birth to Five Matters Framework” as part of daily observations, assessment and planning for children. We can also use it as a guide to making best-fit summative judgements, with parents and colleagues, in relation to whether a child is showing typical development, may be at risk of delay or is ahead for their age. We will record this information in a Learning Journal and keep parents informed of their child’s progress through handovers, parent’s evenings and parents and carers will access to their individual child’s learning and development through our online platform Tapestry (see below for more information).

We operate an open-door policy and welcome parents to come and speak with us if you have any questions or concerns about their child’s development. You are also welcome to book an appointment if you would like to discuss your child’s progress in more detail.
