Helping Your child settle into Huggie Bears Family Childcare: Understanding Attachment

As your child embarks on their exciting journey into nursery life, it’s perfectly natural to have a mix of emotions. This is a big step for everyone involved, and ensuring your child feels safe and happy is a top priority. To help you navigate this transition, let’s explore how the concept of *attachment* plays a vital role in your child’s first nursery experiences.

What is Attachment?

Attachment is a strong, emotional bond that develops between children and their primary caregivers (parents and carers). This connection is essential for a child’s sense of security and confidence as they grow and explore the world. British psychologist John Bowlby first developed the attachment theory, highlighting how these early bonds significantly influence a child’s development.

At Huggie Bears Family Childcare we do not replace this emotional bond but look to enhance it. How may you ask? Well, we nurture this through a comprehensive information sharing process with our settling in forms to get to know your child well. We also conduct settling in sessions that create those first positive early steps to get to know your child and enable them to form a relationship that is positively nurtured from the start.

Settling into Huggie Bears Family Childcare: The Attachment Perspective

1. Building Trust: When your child starts at Huggie Bears Family Childcare, they are entering an unfamiliar environment full of unfamiliar faces and routines. This is where attachment comes into play. A secure attachment with you, their parent, acts as a safe base. When children trust that their caregivers consistently meet their needs, they feel more secure to explore and make new relationships.

2. The Role of Key Persons: The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework sets the standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years in England. It sets out that all children attending an early year’s setting be it a Childminder, Nursery or Pre-school in England is assigned a Key Person. The key person in the EYFS is a dedicated early years practitioner responsible for building strong, supportive relationships with a small group of children, ensuring their emotional security and development. This is a specific staff member who builds a special relationship with your child. This relationship helps your child feel emotionally supported while they are away from home. Having a dependable figure at the early years setting aids in the child’s comfort and attachment formation.

At Huggie Bears Family Childcare, I as the Childminder will be the assigned Key Person. Whilst, as a Childminding setting with a low staff to child ratio, it allows me to build a strong warm and nurturing relationship with your child from the beginning and throughout their journey at Huggie Bears Family Childcare. From your child’s arrival in the morning to when they go home in the evening, they will be cared for and educated in a responsive environment that meets their needs.

3. Gradual Transition: Starting at an early year’s setting can be overwhelming for a child. However, a gradual transition can ease this process. At Huggie Bears Family Childcare we plan ‘settling in’ sessions in anticipation of your child’s first day. Parents are asked to attend the sessions in a structured format that enables your child transition. These valuable sessions allow us to get to know your child and learn all about them. As your child becomes more settled and familiar parents will gradually decrease their stay as they become more comfortable with their surroundings. This helps your child associate Huggie Bears Family Childcare with positive experiences while still feeling your comforting presence nearby.

4. Consistency and Routine: Children thrive on routine as it provides a sense of predictability. We encourage parents and carers to discuss daily routines at Huggie Bears Family Childcare to try to keep similar activities at home where possible. For all babies under the age of twelve months, we will follow babies’ routine. For example, bottle feeds (where a baby is still being breast fed then parents are welcome to bring this on arrival, and it will be stored in the fridge). mealtimes and naptimes. Consistency between home and Huggie Bears Family Childcare can reinforce your child’s confidence and help them feel more settled. For children over twelve months old they will be in the settings routine and for babies this gradual routine change will be supported.

5. Communication is Key: At Huggie Bears Family Childcare we strive to keep open lines of communication with parents and carers. Share your child’s routines and preferences and discuss any concerns or observations you might have. Working together can significantly enhance your child’s early years’ experience.

6. Offering Reassurance: It is normal for children (and parents!) to feel a little anxious during this transition. Offering reassurance and understanding can make a significant difference. Remind your child that you will return at the end of the day and talk positively about the fun activities and friends they will meet.

In Summary

Attachment plays a crucial role in how children adapt to new experiences, including starting at an early year’s setting. A secure attachment helps provide the confidence and security your child needs to flourish. By understanding and supporting their emotional needs, you are setting the stage for a positive, enriching early years’ experience.

We hope this helps you feel more prepared and confident as your child takes this exciting step. Remember, every child adjusts at their own pace, and that is where they will be continued to be supported beyond the settling session period. With love, support, and patience, you’re giving them everything they need to thrive. Happy settling in!
